Agency History/Biographical note:
Mary Louise Browning was born on July 18, 1834, in Petersham,
Massachusetts to Asaph and Lois Hastings Browning. She attended
public schools in Springfield, Massachusetts and taught in Chelsea.
She attended Mount Holyoke Seminary in 1855 (x1857). She did not
graduate, but sailed for India as a missionary in July of 1855. She
married David Herron in April of 1857, and they had four children in
India. She founded a school which became the United Church of North
India Girls High School in Dehra Dun, where she died on November 25,
1863.
Scope and Content:
The Mary L. Herron Papers contain correspondence, dated 1849-86,
family material, biographical material and a published letter. The
letters are primarily written by Herron to her family and discuss
missionary life in India. Some family letters were written after her
death and discuss family issues. The family material includes
histories written by John C. Herron, Mary's grandson. The
biographical material includes alumnae surveys and a newspaper
clipping. The published letter was included in the February 1972
issue of "News Circle," a magazine of the American Women's Club in
Delhi.
