Harriet Johnson attended Ipswich Female Seminary from 1833 until
1837, where she developed close relationships with Zilpah Grant
Banister and Mary Lyon. She later married Isaac Holt and had eight
children.
Scope and Content:
The Harriet Johnson Correspondence consists of letters written to
Johnson's parents and siblings in Newbury, Vermont while she was a
student at Ipswich Female Seminary, 1833-1837. Johnson primarily
describes her daily routine at the Seminary and her admiration for
Zilpah Grant Banister and Mary Lyon. Johnson describes several
lectures given by Banister and Lyon, as well as many of the teaching
philosophies of both women. Johnson notes that Mary Lyon encourages
social interaction, particularly through letter-writing, as an
important aspect of education. Johnson further comments on
excursions from school, mainly travels to Boston. Of particular note
throughout the letters is Johnson's enthusiasm and viewpoints
regarding the education of women.
