Agency History/Biographical note:
Caroline LeConte was born in Ovid, New York, and graduated from Mount
Holyoke Female Seminary in 1841. In 1847 she married C.V.H. Morris, a
doctor, and taught in Ovid. She died in Lodi, New York on February
20, 1899. Her only child, a daughter named Jerusha Morris, also
attended Mount Holyoke Female Seminary (x-Class of 1873).
Scope and Content:
The Caroline LeConte Morris Papers include 17 letters written by
LeConte while she was a student at Mount Holyoke Seminary. The
letters are dated between January 8, 1839 and June 28, 1841 and are
addressed to various family members. The letters discuss life at
Mount Holyoke Female Seminary and in South Hadley in general. Also
included is a letter from her daughter Jerusha Morris Bennett
(x-Class of 1873) regarding her mother's death, a family tree and an
essay dated June 24, 1840 entitled "A Visit to Mt. Holyoke" regarding
an excursion to the summit of Mount Holyoke.
