The Letter:

[Fleetwood?]
11th 8 Mo

My dear friend,
I was glad to get thy letter, and to know that you got something of the fiery greeting our hill sent to your mountain.I am sorry to say the Pickards' can not come. I wish I could look in upon you, before I go back to the lowlands, but I find I must leave here this week and if I staid [stayed] longer I fear I should not feel able to visit you. I am glad, at any rate that I had an opportunity to see thee here. I hear from Oak Knoll that Phebe is quite ill, + they are concerned about her, but I trust it is not so serious. The mail carrier is waiting this morning, and I can only send a great deal of love to all of you. May you have a happy close of summer!

Thine ever

John G Whittier

All the folks send love + greeting[s] [written in margin]
