Committee on Mount Holyoke in Hartford
Record Group Number: RG 16.3.064
The Committee on Mount Holyoke in Hartford was established to discuss
the possibility of Mount Holyoke having a junior college or freshmen
year program in Hartford, Connecticut in collaboration with the
Y.W.C.A. and Trinity College. The school was founded in 1933, and
allowed women to complete work equivalent to a freshmen year at
Mount Holyoke. Many women then transferred to the South Hadley campus,
while others continued their education elsewhere. The campus was
eventually closed due to insufficient housing and funds.
Description of Records:
The records include correspondence, reports, transcriptions from
interviews, lists of graduates and their occupations, and announcements.
Limited background material is included. Results from surveys designed
to investigate the popularity of the program are described. Interviews
include those with members of the YWCA of Hartford, and faculty
members of Trinity and Mount Holyoke Colleges.
