Historical Sketch:
The Academic Committee was established in 1928 to decide all academic
matters at Mount Holyoke College. The Committee primarily dealt
with specific problems of students on low-standing, credit issues,
and curriculum revision. The Committee reviewed and approved all
new and revised courses. The Committee was made up of a group of
appointed faculty members and the Academic Dean. The Committee was
succeeded by the Academic Policy Committee in 1968.
Description of Records:
The records contain minutes with reports, subcommittees' reports
and records, correspondence, and drafts. There is extensive information
on the curriculum revision during the sixties, and on specific cases
of student's academic performance. Matters of policy on credit,
withdrawal, and requirements are discussed in great detail. Subcommittee
records include the curriculum revision committees of 1918, 1929,
1938, 1945, and 1959-1965, General Course in Science Committee (1937),
Grading Committee (1948), Interdepartmental Courses Committee(1954),
Intensive Work Committee (1945), Reading Period (1939), Reading
Week Committee, Reduction of Courses Committee (1937-1948), Required
Work Committee (1945), Statistics on Students/Alumnae (1945), and
the Three- and Four-Course Plans (1936-1938).
