Historical Sketch:
The Committee for Foreign Students was established to supervise
all foreign students at Mount Holyoke College. The Committee raised
funds for refugees during World War II, to pay for their room and
board while studying at Mount Holyoke. Tuition expenses were waived
by the College. The Committee reviewed applications, and monitored
students' progress while at Mount Holyoke College.
Description of Records:
The records contain reports, minutes, financial records, correspondence,
lists, memoranda, and announcements. An account book for 1939-1946
is included, as well as Treasurer's Reports from 1939-1972. Correspondence
include discussion of giving scholarships to refugees from Japan
and Germany during World War II, schedules of students arrival times
and destinations, the formation of language houses, and encouraging
applications from abroad. Biographical information on a variety
of students is included, such as country of origin, academic performance
at Mount Holyoke College, and summer plans.
