Record Group Number: RG 16.3.135

Historical Sketch:
The Committee on Social Responsibility was established to investigate
policies of companies which hold Mount Holyoke investments. The
Committee was composed of six faculty members and served as an advisory
committee to the Board of Trustees. The Committee primarily dealt
with South African investments, but also addressed issues of animal
testing and environmental policies supported by companies.
Description of Records:
The records contain minutes, agendas, correspondence, reports, memoranda,
newspaper clippings, and notebooks. Information on Mount Holyoke's
investment history, funding requests, trustee proxy voting records
(1977-1979), clean investment alternatives, records of President
Kennan's correspondence with companies, and policy statements of
South African investment by a variety of colleges can be found in
the notebooks. Most documents relate to the investment of Mount
Holyoke's resources in corporations with ties to South Africa, but
some information on animal testing and environmental awareness is
also included. Detailed financial information on the allocation
of College resources is available. Information on trustees, including
biographical sketches and voting tendencies, is also included.
