Medieval Studies Program

Historical Sketch:
Medieval Studies became an official major program in 1974. The major
in medieval Studies is designed to offer students training in appropriate
languages and certain other basic aspects of medieval civilization.
It is an interdisciplinary program which offers a wide range of
courses in medieval art, languages, literature, music, history,
and religion.
Description of Records:
The Medieval Studies Program Records date from 1974-1994 and contain
correspondence, leaflets, course lists, and exhibit guides. These
records include information on various special events such as a
symposium on "Monsters, Gargoyles, and Dragons", medieval plays
put on by a visiting troupe from Toronto, and the Annual Ruth J.
Dean lecture. Information such as program descriptions and lists
of faculty involved in Medieval studies from 1917 to 1979 are included
as well. The records contain annual reports from the years 1974/75-1990/91.
The reports include enrollment statistics, budget requests, syllabi
and writing assignments. Information about course development, lectures
and conferences, the Five College Medieval Studies Program, awards,
and academic achievements of majors are also included.
