Urban Studies Program
Records, 1969-1982
Record Group Number: RG 18.56
Historical Sketch:
The Urban Studies Program began in 1968. It was an interdisciplinary
major whose purpose was to study the complex physical and social
systems which are the modern city and to examine urban trends and
problems. In 1984 the program was ended due to a decline in interest
in Urban Studies as a major.
Description of Records:
The Urban Studies Program Records date from 1969-1982 and contain
annual reports, correspondence, conference programs, pamphlets,
and student papers. The correspondence concerns bringing Doxiadis,
of Greece, to Mount Holyoke as a guest lecturer. The program for
an Urban Studies conference in 1982 is titled "High Tech Firms and
Central City Job Creation in Massachusetts and Beyond." The student
papers cover a wide variety of topics, such as, "New Towns and the
Federal Urbanization Policy," "Recreation in New Towns," and "Redefining
the City as a Nice Place to Be." The annual reports from 1969-1982
contain information on curriculum, lectures, conferences, the Five
College Seminar, statistics on enrollments, academic achievements
of majors, and future plans of graduating seniors. Pamphlets and
booklets are also included among the annual reports including a
pamphlet on "Urban Studies at Mount Holyoke," a program for the
"Future of the City Week," and a Five Colleges booklet on "Urban
Studies and Related Courses." The last annual report from 1982 is
a final assessment to determine whether or not to continue the Urban
Studies Program.
