Historical Sketch:
The Biochemistry department was created in 1973. It was designed
to provide its majors with a strong background in the fundamentals
of both biology and chemistry and to provide knowledge of the interrelationship
which exists between biology and chemistry. It is an interdisciplinary
program with courses in the biology, chemistry, physics, and psychology
departments.
Description of Records:
The Biochemistry Records contain a pamphlet, a poster, an article,
and annual reports. The pamphlet contains information on biochemistry
at Mount Holyoke from 1983/84. There is also a poster advertising
a conference titled "Promise or Peril: A Symposium on Recombinant
DNA, and an article put out by the Board of Admissions, in 1990,
on Biochemistry at Mount Holyoke. The bulk of the records are annual
reports of the Biochemistry program from 1974 through 1994. These
reports contain information on staffing, equipment and space needs,
budgets, and grant funding. They contain information on curriculum
including course and lab development, evaluation of new courses,
exams, and independent work in biochemistry. There is information
on annual events such as the seminar program/lecture series and
the student symposium. Also included are lists of honors papers
written by students, as well as, awards presented to majors and
future plans of graduating majors.
