Environmental Studies Program

Historical Sketch:
The Environmental Studies Committee was formed in 1989, and, after
a lengthy, debate on the proposed structure of the major, it was
instituted in 1992. The Environmental Studies Program is concerned
with the interactions between people and their environment and is
designed to provide students with an appreciation of the multidisciplinary
nature of environmental issues. The program includes courses from
the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences.
Description of Records:
The Environmental Studies Program records date from 1992, and include
three articles. Two articles written in 1992,"Environmental Studies
Adopted as Interdisciplinary Major" and "Mount Holyoke Offers Major
in Environmental Awareness," describe the courses offered and the
purpose of the program. The third article written in 1997 and entitled
"Senior Environmental Seminar Imagines 'Green Plan' for the College"
is about the Environmental Studies senior seminar and their project
to conceptualize an environmental plan for the college.
