Mount Holyoke Seminary and College
Scrapbooks, 1870-1937
Record Group Number: RG 21
24 volumes (12 linear feet)
Historical Sketch:
The volumes appear to be official scrapbooks of Mount Holyoke Seminary
and College. Although it is not clear who compiled most of the scrapbooks,
Anna C. Edwards, Mount Holyoke Seminary class of 1859, arranged
some of the earlier volumes. Edwards was also a faculty member from
1868 until 1892 and the first associate principal of the Seminary
from 1883 until 1888.
Description of Records:
The scrapbooks consist primarily of newspaper clippings dating from
1870 to 1937 which concern Mount Holyoke students, faculty, staff,
alumnae, and events. Most of the clippings are from the Springfield
(MA) "Daily Republican." Others are from newspapers published in
New York, or in Boston, Hartford and other New England cities. The
earlier volumes include clippings from religious periodicals and
published historical sketches about Mount Holyoke. In addition,
the scrapbooks contain correspondence, announcements of and invitations
and tickets to Mount Holyoke events, hand-written notes, prints,
and photographs. Of particular note are articles describing the
transition from seminary to college, the 1896 fire and rebuilding,
and President McKinley's 1899 visit and presentation of diplomas
at commencement.
