Historical Sketch:
Meribeth E. Cameron was born in Ingersoll, Ontario, and received
her B.A., M.A. and PhD from Stanford University, as well as an MA
from Radcliff College. An authority on modern Chinese history, she
taught and published extensively on that subject. She was Academic
Dean and professor of history at Mount Holyoke College from 1948-1970,
and served as Acting President in 1954, 1966 and 1968-1969. She
was also an editor of the Far Eastern Quarterly and Chairman of
the National Committee on International Relations of the American
Association of University Women (A.A.U.W.). She retired from Mount
Holyoke College in 1970.
Description of Records:
Professional information in the records of Meribeth E. Cameron is
in the form of correspondence, dating from 1966-1969; writings (1948-1969);
biographical material including her faculty record and a number
of news clippings; and photographs. Her correspondence involves
matters such as parietals and responses to complaints; and records
her contact with alumnae. The writings comprise study guides, journal
articles and Cameron's 1969 Commencement address, while the biographical
material documents her career as educator and member of many learned
and professional societies, among them the American Historical Association.
Particular mention is made of her academic Fellowships and grants,
honorary degrees and scholarly publications.
