Office of the Treasurer
Records, 1873-1985

Record Group Number: RG 5

15 boxes (11.08 linear feet)

Historical Sketch:
When Mount Holyoke Female Seminary was founded in 1837, the office of Treasurer to the Board of Trustees and to the Seminary was held by a Board Member. This changed in 1915 with the appointment of a College Treasurer who no longer served on the Board. Over the next seventy years the office and responsibilities of the Treasurer underwent considerable changes; at different periods, the Treasurer also held the posts of Business Manager and Comptroller. From 1987-1993 the Office of the Treasurer included both the posts of Treasurer and Comptroller. The Office of Financial Services emerged in 1994. It is a merger of Treasurer, Comptroller and Financial Aid, together with several other financial departments.

Description of Records:
The records of the Treasurer's Office include reports (Income & Expenditure Accounts, Balance Sheets, endowment, stock income, etc.); ledgers (1873-1907); budgets; bequest files (of Emily Abbey Gill and Mary S. Mandelle) and the Trust Records of Herbert A. Wilder (1923-1968), consisting of correspondence, memos, receipts, copies of wills, records of investments, etc.; Treasurer Merrill Ewing's office files, dated from 1937-1985 and Lawrence Remilliard Files (predominantly 1953-1969), both of which contain correspondence, memos, minutes and committee reports.
