Historical Sketch:
A Dean of Freshmen was first appointed in 1973 to deal with the
affairs of first year students, and remained within the Office of
the Dean of the Faculty until 1990. In that year the Office of the
Dean of Studies was separated from the Office of the Dean of the
Faculty to function independently. Concurrently, the Dean of Freshmen
was re-titled Dean of First Year Studies - in 1991 the name was
changed to Dean of First Year Students - and began to function within
the Office of the Dean of Studies.
Description of Records:
The records of the Dean of First Year Students include announcements
to the Faculty from the Dean; correspondence with President Kennan;
letters to the incoming class; and an annual report for 1990. The
materials detail academic and nonacademic problems and concerns
of the first year class and include information about first year
tutorials and faculty advising for the students.
