Appraisal Policies

Appraisal is the process that archivists go through to evaluate records and documents for their continuing value. Appraisal is perhaps the most daunting and intellectually demanding task that archivists must undertake. Ultimately, the creation of a comprehensive historic record depends to a great extent on the care with which they have appraised the documents in their care. Because of this appraisal must be conducted in a consistent fashion and with a broad view. In an attempt to formalize the appraisal process at the Mount Holyoke College Archives and Special Collections we have laid out the following policies and procedures.

  1. Appraisal Criteria for College Records
  2. Appraisal Criteria for Personal Papers
  3. Document Type Lists
  4. Deaccessioning Policy
