In 1978 a woman once again assumed the leadership of Mount Holyoke as the College called back one of its own, Elizabeth Topham Kennan (class of 1960). As under every other president, land acquisition, building construction and building conversion continued. The Bookshop Inn, the former Maria Smith property was converted in 1979 to the Newhall Center for the use of the Admission and Financial Aid offices. A field house adjoining a renovated Kendall Gymnasium formed a Sports Complex dedicated in 1985. This necessitated the relocation of the stables to a new Equestrian Center on the east bank of Upper Lake.

A library expansion brought together the scattered science collections and incorporates computing and audio visual facilities. Nor was the extracurricular life of the student ignored: the conversion of Blanchard, the 1899 gymnasium, to a Campus Center provides a focus for the gathering of a wide variety of backgrounds and interests.
