The Electronic Reserves system is viewed as an electronic extension
of the traditional course reserve model, a non-commercial venture
for nonprofit educational purposes only. The Electronic Reserve
system provides access to an on-line method for finding reserve
materials such as; a chapter of a book, journal articles, course
syllabi, assignments, lecture notes and exams. The Library is
responsible
for seeking permission from the Copyright Clearance Center to ensure
compliance with the Copyright Law. Materials for each
course are only available to the students enrolled in the course.
Students must obtain the password for their electronic reserve materials
from their instructor.
Five College students enrolled in an MHC course will need a guest
account in order to authenticate from off-campus. Please call the
Help Desk at 2600 for further information.
Guidelines for the electronic reserves system
- Materials may be placed on electronic reserve only for the purpose
of serving the needs of specified educational programs.
- On the preliminary electronic reserves screen, the system displays
a copyright notice, consistent with the notice described in
section
108 of the Copyright Act.
- Materials on reserve will include a citation to the original
source of publication.
- Students will not be charged specifically or directly for access
to the electronic reserve systems, and no person or department
at the college will benefit monetarily from the use of the material.
- The system will permit simultaneous use by multiple on-campus
users accessible on the Mount Holyoke College network.
- Network access, including World Wide Web access, to Mount Holyoke
College electronic reserve collections that include copyrighted
material is restricted to the Mount Holyoke campus network
- On campus users may view, download or print copies from the
electronic reserve system. The Mount Holyoke College system stores
documents in Adobe PDF (Portable Document Format) files. If a
student is accessing electronic reserves from a personal machine
in her dorm she must download Adobe Acrobat Reader before viewing
and printing.
- Users may make one copy for private study, personal reading
research, scholarship, or education.
- The library will not place materials on electronic reserves
if it judges that the nature, scope or extent of the material
is beyond the reasonable limits of fair use.
- Complete monographs, which are in print, will not be scanned
into the electronic reserves system. Single chapters of books
owned by the library, generally constituting no more than 10%
of the complete work, can be scanned into the electronic reserves
system.
- The electronic reserves system is not a substitute for coursepacks
- Access to electronic reserve materials is terminated at the
end of the semester.
