Borrowing Library Laptop Computers

Access Services has twenty wireless laptop computers for use within the Williston, Miles-Smith, Dwight complex.

Eligible Borrowers

  • Current Mount Holyoke students, faculty and staff are eligible to check out a laptop.
  • A valid Mount Holyoke College OneCard must be presented to checkout a laptop.
  • An Annual Laptop Loan Agreement form needs to be filled out and signed prior to checking out a laptop each academic year.

Loan Period and Availability

  • Laptops may be borrowed for a 3-hour period. They may be renewed for one additional period providing no other patron is waiting to check out a laptop.
  • Laptops are available on a first-come first-served basis. No reservations will be accepted.
  • Laptops are due back at the Circulation Desk ½ hour before the library closes. There is no overnight loan.
  • Laptops are for use within the Williston, Miles-Smith, Dwight complex only. They may not be taken out of the buildings.
  • If your library account is blocked due to unpaid fines you will not be able to checkout a laptop.
  • Only one laptop per person may be checked out at a time.

Fines and Liability

  • Overdue fines accrue at the rate of $10.00 per hour.
  • Do not use the laptop clock to determine the time due back, it is not accurate.
  • A replacement charge for $2,500, and a non-refundable service fee of $15.00 will be accessed for lost, stolen or non-returned laptops.
  • Damage to a laptop and/or its peripherals (power supply, cord, cable, mouse, batteries and wireless card - if applicable) will result in full repair or replacement costs.
  • Overdue fines, repair and replacement charges will be applied to the patron's Mount Holyoke General Account.

Annual Laptop Agreement

The first time a patron checks out a laptop an "Annual Laptop Agreement" must be completed, acknowledging financial responsibility for lost or damaged equipment. The form will be kept on file in the Access Services Department in the Library.

Additional Guidelines

  • Do not leave the laptop unattended at any time.
  • You may not attach other hardware to the laptop, install your own software or change system settings.
  • Neither LITS nor Mount Holyoke College is responsible for damage to your personal disks, or for the loss of any data during the loan period.
  • Patrons need to save data to their personal disks or to their personal web space. Do not save anything to the laptops' "C" drive, it will be deleted once the laptop is powered off.
  • LITS is not responsible for any files remaining on the laptop once it is returned. Once a laptop is returned, hard disks will be restored to their basic template.
  • Please save your work frequently. Battery failure might result in lost work.
  • Hardware or software support is available in the Media Services office during their normal operating hours.
