  • National Center for Education Statistics. Provides access to major statistical reports on the state of education in the United States.
  • UNESCO Education Information Service. Includes recent issues of the publication, Statistics on Education.
  • UNESCO Statistical Yearbook. Selected statistics are available for downloading. The library acquires the most recent printed version (AZ 361 U45 Ref).
  • U.S. Census Bureau Education Data.
  • U.S. Department of Education: topics from A to Z. Major access point to the Department's services and documents. The full text of the most recent publications, Condition of Education and Digest of Education Statistics can be found here.

 

Searching for Books

You can look for books by searching the Five College Online Library Catalog by author, title or subject. The following are examples of subject headings that might be useful: "Education--Elementary," "Cognitive Styles," "Education Equalization--United States," and "Language Experience Approach in Education" (the subject term for whole language materials!) You may also find it helpful to browse the call numbers L thru LT in the main stacks for primary and secondary sources on education.

Bibliographies and Indexes

  • Child Development Abstracts and Bibliography. Available in print format from 1927 in the Reference Room, call number: HQ 750 A1 C47 REF.
  • ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center)(1966 - present)
    National index to materials in the field of education, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. Contains over 700,000 citations covering research documents, journal articles, technical reports, curricular materials, etc. Records marked "EJ" are citations to journal articles; "ED" are "ERIC Documents," texts which are available through three major avenues: 1) The fulltext of "ED" documents from 1993-present are now available online and are directly linked from ERIC; 2) For "ED" documents prior to 1993, UMass Amherst has most of these on microfiche--the UMass librarians encourage you to ask for help on your first visit. 3) If you are not in a hurry, or can't get to UMass, you may also submit an interlibrary loan request for ERIC documents that are not available online, just be sure to include the "ED #" somewhere in your request.   • Education Index (1983 - present)
    Citation index for periodical literature and yearbooks, covering every age and sector of the educational community from preschool through college. Indexes over 400 periodicals beginning 1994. Updated monthly. Print volumes preceding this electronic resource from 1929-1984 may be found in the Williston stacks, call number: LB 5 .E4.
  • Family Index (1995 - present)
    Interdisciplinary index for periodical articles covering a wide range of topics in family studies; includes over 2000 journal titles. This database is preceded by the Inventory of Marriage and Family Literature which is available in print format only from 1973 to 1994 in the Main Reference Room, call number: HQ 728 A482 REF. Updated monthly.
  • PsycInfo (1872 - present)
    This bibliographic database covers the professional and academic literature in psychology and related disciplines. Coverage is worldwide, and includes references and abstracts to over 1,800 journals, and dissertations in more than 30 languages, and to book chapters and books in the English language. Linked from PsycINFO is access to PsycARTICLES, an ejournal collection that contains recent issues of the 40 journals published by the American Psychological Association, along with 3 journals published by the Canadian Psychological Association and 6 journals published by Hogrefe and Huber.
    Updated monthly. The PsycINFO index also exists in print format under the title Psychological Abstracts from 1927- 1969 and can be found in the Science Periodicals.. Journals Indexed.
