Searching for Books

Spanish Language and Literature materials may be found throughout the library stacks. One place that might be useful for browsing, however, are the PC and PQ sections in the Main Stacks. You may search for books using the Five College Online Library Catalog by author, title or subject.

Bibliographies and Indexes

  • Arts and Humanities Search  -A major index to thousands of humanities journals. Available online (1980- ) via the Web of Science (select the Arts and Humanities Citation Index).
  • Ethnic NewsWatch -An interdisciplinary, bilingual, and comprehensive full text database of the newspapers, magazines and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press. Designed to provide the "other side of the story," ENW titles offer additional viewpoints from those proffered by the mainstream press.
  • Hispanic American Periodicals Online (HAPI) -Indexes journals published throughout the Western world, from 1970 to the present, that cover Central and South Americas, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Hispanics in the United States.
  • Handbook of Latin American Studies (HLAS) -A searchable bibliography of scholarly works published in the social sciences and humanities, edited by the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress; also available in print (1935- ). Main Ref. Z 1605 H23.
  • Humanities Abstracts  -Available online (1984- ) via FirstSearch. This index covers about 400 journals in archaeology, art, classics, film, folklore, journalism, linguistics, the fine arts, philosophy, religion, world history, and world literature; also available in print (1974- ) as the Humanities Index. Main Periodicals.
  • MLA Bibliography (1963 - present)
    The Modern Languages Association International Bibliography indexes critical scholarship on literature, languages, linguistics and folklore. Provides approximately 1,200,000 records to over 3,500 international publications including journals, books, series, dissertations, bibliographies, working papers, proceedings, and other materials. Updated ten times a year. The index is available in paper format from 1921-1995 in the Main Reference Room, call number: PN1 M64 REF. The most recent edition of the companion to the bibliography, "MLA Directory of Periodicals: a Guide to Journals and Series in Languages and Literatures", is held in the Main Reference Room, call number: PN 161 M3.

  • BubLink -Links to several spanish language tutorials and vocabulary builders.
  • Centro Virtual Cervantes -Created by the Instituto Cervantes, a public institution founded by the Spanish Govermnent in 1991 to promote Spanish language teaching and knowledge of the cultures of Spanish speaking countries throughout the world.
  • Cervantes Digital Library -Project developed in collaboration with the Center for the Study of Digital Libraries, Prof. Fred Jehle of Indiana-Purdue University and the Centro de Estudios Cervantinos; includes browsable texts and images.
  • CLNet Research Center -Includes spanish language and literature resources such as comp-jugador verb conjugator; part of the the Chicana/o and Latina/o network offered by the University of California.
  • Iberian Language and Literature Web  -Provides access to scholarly resources on the literatures of Spain and Portugal, including bibliographies, electronic texts and literary reviews; created by the Association of College and Research Libraries.
  • Internet Resources for Latin America  -An exhaustive Internet guide compiled by New Mexico State University, includes links to newspapers, electronic listservs, and newsgroups.
  • Internet Resources for Latin America, Spain and Portugal -University of Arizona hosts this extensive listing of Internet resources, ranging from language and literature to government and history.
  • LANIC -Links to Latin American literature resources, grouped by country, compiled by the University of Texas at Austin. This web page is part of a larger network for Latin American studies.
  • Pagina de la Lengua Espanola -Spanish language Internet links hosted by La Delegacion de Alumnos de Teleco in Madrid, Spain; includes online dictionaries, language tutorials, and electronic publications.
  • La Pagina del Idioma Espanol -Links to Spanish language grammar exercises, dictionaries, news, etc., edited by journalist Ricardo Soca.
  • University of Chicago Spanish Resources -Access spanish language, textual and cultural resources, including international newspapers and language tutorials.
  • Voice of the Shuttle: Spanish and Portuguese Literature -Provides links to author-specific web pages, including Borges, Cervantes, and Garcia Marquez; hosted by the University of California, Santa Barbara.
