Wireless Network Cards

Registering your Wireless Network Card

Wireless@MHC

We recommended that you use a "802.11 B/G" wireless network card due to the increased range of coverage of "G" (It really does offer much better wireless coverage). We currently do not have any "802.11 A" wireless access points (nor do we plan to implement any).

Current Wireless zones:

Library

Most of the Library is currently setup for wireless. However there are a few "dead spots". Approximately 90% of the carrels do have wireless access. For a graphical overview of the areas covered, click on Wireless Coverage Maps below.

Encryption

Encryption via the Access Point should not be counted on as Secure. Instead, other secure connections should be used such as SSH and SSL. We currently do not use WEP and due to client compatibility issues, we do not use WPA (not all clients support it).

Wireless Network Cards

So far we have tested the following (known to work), however most cards should work:
  • Proxim
  • Linksys
  • Cisco
  • 3com
  • Apple
  • Intel

Registering Your Wireless Network card

You will need to register your wireless network card. This is done by doing an "ip-request" from the mhc% prompt. At the first program prompt enter:

wireless

then read and follow the instructions listed.

Other Notes:

Some of our Access Points, our Proxim's, are set to allow both Encrypted connections as well as unencrypted connections. Most others are not set to only unencrypted (Cisco AP's).

We have seen some issues while trying to connect a Linksys wireless Ethernet card to some of our our Proxim Access Points, however extensive testing has not been done.

Students wanting to use the wireless network are required to run a second ip-request to register their wireless cards.
