Designing Web Pages for Accessibility

What is or ?

RSS readers allow you to browse the latest, continually updated news and information by collecting current news and headlines and content updates from favorite web sources in one page or set of bookmarks. For example, one can view updated news and headlines from BBC.com, CNN.com, NYTimes.com, etc. with the click of a single button. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary. The XML icon is used on some sites for these same services.

There are several different ways to manage RSS feeds.

Web Browser based RSS feeds:
Most newer internet browsers support RSS Feeds. We recommend the Firefox Browser (v1.0.4 or higher) for both Windows and Mac operating systems.

Do you need to download Firefox on your computer?
The latest version of Firefox is available through MHC's software distribution on ambr.

On Mac OS X operating systems, the new version of Safari (Tiger) also supports RSS feeds.

Web portal RSS feeds for use on public computers:
If you are working on a public computer, web-based portals such as Bloglines offer an easy and convenient way to gather RSS feeds without having to download a program or set personal preferences on a public computer. Instructions are available on the Bloglines site.

RSS-Feed is an online RSS reader that allows you to create an account and read RSS feeds from anywhere through a web browser. More information about the service and a free login account is available at http://www.rss-feed.org

RSS Feed (News) Reader Software:
If you prefer to use a separate program rather than a web browser, there are a number of news reader programs that can be downloaded and installed on your own computer. One free downloadable news reader is FeedReader. Instructions for downloading and installation are on the FeedReader site.

RSSOwl is also a free, cross-platform RSS Reader. You can see an overview of the program at: http://www.rssowl.org/overview instructions for downloading and using with your particular computer operating system are at: http://www.rssowl.org

RssReader is a good reader for Windows computers and NetNewsWireLite is one of the most popular and best reviewed readers for Mac OS X.

A number of other news reader programs are listed on this page created from a Google search.
