NORTON, Mass. (Sept. 23, 2008) - Using a balanced attack, the Wheaton College women's soccer team picked up a 4-1 victory over Mount Holyoke College this afternoon at a rain-soaked Mirrione Stadium. It was the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both squads.

Wheaton, ranked eighth in the country and second in the New England Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), defeated the Lyons for the 14th time in a row.

Junior Lyndsey McManus and first year Emily Vincunas recorded one goal and one assist apiece to pace the hosts. McManus figured in on the first two tallies, including the match winner in the 34th minute.

The tandem connected on the day's opening score just 4:16 into the contest, as McManus sent a ball over the Mount Holyoke defense to a streaking Vincunas, who finished the breakaway by rolling her shot past junior goalkeeper Elaine Harvey.

McManus later took a feed across the box from sophomore Lauren Caney and found the back of the net for what proved to be the winner at the 33:19 mark.

The hosts extended their cushion to 3-0 just over four minutes later, when first year Bailey Bowling took a through ball from sophomore Christina Bertrand and converted her first collegiate goal.

After missing a one-on-one chance and having an apparent goal erased due to an offsides call during a two-minute span late in the contest, Wheaton eventually cashed in during the 86th minute. Sophomore Melida Alvarez used an assist from Vincunas to notch her team leading eighth tally of the season from the right side of the box.

Mount Holyoke broke through for its lone goal in the 89th minute, when sophomore midfielder Yuko Takahashi collected her own rebound and beat first year goalkeeper Lindsay Leddy.

Leddy turned aside four of Mount Holyoke's 11 shots to collect the victory. At the other end, Harvey made seven saves for the visitors. Wheaton finished with 20 shots.

Mount Holyoke (2-6-0, 0-1-0 NEWMAC) will return home for a non-conference clash versus Lesley University on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
