WELLESLEY, Mass. (Oct. 4, 2008) - Sophomore defender Sally Scudder recorded a pair of goals to boost the Wellesley College women's field hockey team to a 4-0 triumph over visiting Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action this morning.

Wellesley also received solid production from sophomore forwards Kate Cushing and Katie Frett, who added one goal apiece. It was the Blue's 11th straight win over the Lyons.

Scudder tallied the only goal of the first half just over 14 minutes into the contest, when she took a pass from junior midfielder Molly Morrow and scored from the right side.

Mount Holyoke controlled much of the opening frame after the Wellesley goal, building advantages in both shots (10-7) and penalty corner opportunities (8-4). Senior goalkeeper Emily Hewitt was up to the task for the Blue. She made six saves before the break and made a brilliant stop on a penalty stroke from senior midfielder Anne Doton.

Wellesley took advantage of a penalty corner chance in the 48th minute to push its lead to 2-0. After collecting a rebound, Frett sent a shot past Mount Holyoke first year goalkeeper Katie Gibson. Scudder then notched an unassisted goal in the 61st minute to put the Blue in front 3-0.

Down by three, the Lyons turned on the pressure over the next eight minutes, racking up five penalty corners and four shots. After a shot on a penalty corner pulled Hewitt away from the cage, Doton launched a shot that was saved by the senior defender Becca Leclerc. Leclerc then sent the ball up the field where Wellesley ended up with a two-on-one attack. At the tail end of the play, first year midfielder Whitney Reid tipped a pass to Cushing, who iced things with her third goal of the season.

Hewitt made nine saves en route to the shutout for Wellesley (5-3, 2-0 NEWMAC). Senior Allie Walsh turned away three shots in 20 minutes before giving way to Gibson, who collected seven saves in the final 49 minutes.

Mount Holyoke (5-3, 1-1 NEWMAC) will host Smith College for a league tilt on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
