WPI Stifles Field Hockey, 3-0

WORCESTER, Mass. (Oct. 11, 2008) - Using a balanced scoring attack, the Worcester Polytechnic Institute women's field hockey team blanked visiting Mount Holyoke College today in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at Alumni Field. It was the Engineers fifth win in their last six outings.

WPI jumped out to 1-0 advantage just 11:06 into the contest, when senior forward Nicole Maglione scored off a crossing pass from junior midfielder Kelly Johnson. Maglione's team leading sixth tally of the season came as a result of a penalty corner opportunity.

Seven minutes later, junior midfielder Jackie McDonough redirected a rocket off the stick of first year midfielder Paige Hanson to put the Engineers in front 2-0.

WPI (8-4, 3-1 NEWMAC) tacked on an insurance goal in the 42nd minute, when first year midfielder Danielle Antonellis blasted a shot from the top of the circle past senior goalkeeper Allie Walsh. Her first collegiate tally followed a wild scramble in front of the Lyons cage.

Mount Holyoke fell despite edges in both shots (11-7) and penalty corners (13-5). The guests racked up eight straight corners in the final 12 minutes of the contest.

Betsy Ray collected five saves en route to her fifth shutout of the season and sixth of her career. Walsh finished with three stops.

Mount Holyoke (6-4, 2-2 NEWMAC) will return to action on Tuesday, when it hosts Springfield College for a NEWMAC clash beginning at 4:30 p.m.
