MHC president Joanne V Creighton will depart for Sydney, Australia, January 2 to attend the fourth international meeting of Women’s Education Worldwide (WEW), an alliance of more than 50 women’s colleges from five continents, which she cofounded with Smith College president Carol Christ in 2003.

The conference, Empowering Women: The Economic Imperative, will be held at the Women’s College of the University of Sydney from January 6-8. Dean of faculty and vice president for academic affairs Donal O’Shea, assistant professor of psychology and education Lenore Carlisle, executive assistant to the president Jesse Lytle, trustee and former president of the Alumnae Association Mary Davis ’65, and trustee and president of the Alumnae Association Cynthia Reed ’80 also will attend the conference.

The mission of WEW is to share best practices, to collect and disseminate data about women’s colleges, to foster exchange among its institutions, and, most importantly, to advocate for women’s education worldwide.

“I am looking forward to this important conference. Women are still the world’s greatest underutilized natural resource. Education is the key to unlocking that potential,” Creighton said. “Women’s colleges have a distinguished heritage and a continuing stake in advancing the great unfinished agenda of the twenty-first century: the education and advancement of women across all ethnic, racial, age, and socioeconomic groups both within our country and around the world.”

After the WEW conference, Creighton will head to Hong Kong, where she’ll visit MHC alumnae and speak to the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong on January 14. Her talk is titled “Educating Women To Be Global Leaders.”

At the same time, O’Shea, Carlisle, and Lytle will head to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to meet with administrators at Effat University. Mount Holyoke is exploring enhanced cooperation with Effat.
