BY JEAN KILBOURNE: A MOUNT HOLYOKE COLLEGE LECTURE
CHAPIN AUDITORIUM, NOVEMBER 11, 7:30 PM
SOUTH HADLEY, Massachusetts--Dr. Jean Kilbourne, internationally known media critic, lecturer, and writer, will present a program entitled "Deadly Persuasions: Advertising and Addictions" on Thursday, November 11, at 7:30 PM in Chapin Auditorium. Kilbourne's program is free and open to the public; the program will have a sign interpreter.
The lecture is based on Kilbourne's upcoming book, Deadly Persuasion: Why Women and Girls Must Fight the Addictive Power of Advertising (Free Press). Kilbourne, a frequent lecturer on American college campuses, is internationally known for her work on the effects of alcohol and tobacco advertising and the image of women in advertising. She has made several documentary films based on her lectures, including the widely screened Killing Us Softly: Advertising's Image of Women and its follow-up, Still Killing Us Softly.
Kilbourne has served as an advisor to the U.S. Surgeon General and has testified before Congress. She is currently a visiting scholar at Wellesley College.
The Odyssey Bookshop will host a book signing immediately following the presentation. The program is sponsored by The Five College Women's Research Center, Mount Holyoke College (MHC) Alcohol and Drug Awareness Project, The Purington Fund at MHC, and the Mount Holyoke College Alcohol and Drug Advisory Committee.
