The 2010 Spring Flower Show, “A Wizard’s World: Renaissance Science and Magic,” held at Mount Holyoke College’s Talcott Greenhouse, will run March 6-21. This horticultural event will showcase hundreds of spring-blossoming bulbs and plants, which will be displayed in the main Show House.
Flower Show attendees can expect to see fragrant favorites, such as hyacinths, narcissus, pansies, freesia, primroses, and canary broom, as well as tulips, anemones, ranunculus, crocus, scilla, muscari, cineraria, and calceolaria or pocketbook plant.
On March 12, the Amherst Bulletin's Cheryl Wilson reviewed the flower show and a similar show at Smith, noting, in part:
"The theme this year at Mount Holyoke is 'A Wizard's World: Renaissance Science and Magic.' So, of course, there is a wizard's hat, an owl, a black cat and a broom crafted from a sapling with a brush of ornamental grass. There is even a grape hyacinth or muscari called Ocean Magic.
"Muscari are just one of the many so-called little bulbs that round out the bulb shows. Look for scillas, fritillarias, chionodoxa and ipheion to mention just a few of the miniature treasures. Fragrant freesias add to the scent of the hyacinths and primroses, cineraria and cyclamen add to the displays."
The show is open to the public daily through March 21. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free, although donations are welcomed.
