WORCESTER, Mass. (Feb. 4, 2009) – Junior forward Jillian Camilleri recorded a double-double on 12 points and 11 rebounds, as the Clark University women’s basketball team downed New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Mount Holyoke College 54-46 this evening at the Kneller Athletic Center. With the win, the Cougars completed the two game season sweep of the Lyons.

Three players reached double digits in the scoring column for Clark, which shot 37.3% (19-51) from the field and drained four three pointers. The Cougars finished with a 44-40 edge on the glass. First year forward Ivori Aiken knocked down a pair of treys en route to 12 points and seven boards. Meanwhile, senior guard Sara Hagstrom tallied ten points and five assists.

Mount Holyoke was paced by junior guard Erin Cain, who totaled a game high 13 points on 6-of-18 shooting from the floor. She also pulled down ten rebounds to complete her second career double-double. First year forward Tricia Chase registered nine points, while senior guard Katie Austen chipped in with eight points and eight boards off the bench. The Lyons converted just 29.7% (19-64) of their attempts from the floor and netted three shots from beyond the arc.

Both squads struggled on the offensive end in the first half. Mount Holyoke led 15-5 following a three pointer by first year forward Emma Washauer 11 minutes into the contest. The Lyons were then held scoreless for the remainder of the opening frame, as Clark closed the gap to 15-13. Cain led all scorers with six points at the break.

The Cougars grabbed a 16-15 advantage after an Aiken trey in the first minute of the second stanza. Four minutes later, she knocked down a free throw to put her team in front 27-22.

Mount Holyoke stayed within five points for the next ten minutes and eventually tied things up at 42-42 on a jumper by Austen at the 5:15 mark. Clark answered with a bucket on its ensuing possession, but a Chase layup with 3:56 remaining in regulation knotted things up again.

From there it was all Clark (9-11, 5-3 NEWMAC). The Cougars closed out the game with a 10-2 run to seal things. Camilleri put down the go-ahead layin at the 3:40 mark and her team went 7-of-9 from the charity stripe down the stretch.

Mount Holyoke (6-14, 3-5 NEWMAC) will return to action on Saturday, when it hosts NEWMAC foe Wellesley College at 2:00 p.m.
