SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (April 4, 2009) – Four teams took part in the 2009 Mount Holyoke College Track and Field Invitational this afternoon in South Hadley, Mass. Joining the host Lyons at the non-scoring meet were the University of Southern Maine Huskies, the Smith College Pioneers and the Wellesley College Blue.

Leading the way for Mount Holyoke was first year Miriam Larson-Koester, who grabbed fourth place in the discus and fifth place in the hammer. With her toss of 33.50 meters in the discus, she qualified for the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships. Additionally, her distance of 34.56 in the hammer was a personal best.

The Lyons also received a boost from senior Chelsea McCracken, who collected top honors in the hammer with a collegiate best throw of 35.95 meters.

Mount Holyoke’s 4 x 100-meter relay team of sophomore Jacinta Edebeli, first year Courtney Carrier, first year Artemis Sapountzi and first year Bree Ligon-Hollinger took third place. Their time of 53.16 was less than one second off the mark needed to qualify for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship.

A total of 11 facility records were established at the annual competition. Among those, two marks were broken by former Lyons. Caroline Gillaspie grabbed first place in high jump with a height of 1.61 meters, and Meghan Lynch recorded a first place time of 18:02.55 in the 5,000-meter run. Both 2008 graduates broke records that they had previously set last spring. Fifteen Mount Holyoke alums took part in the meet, and many more were in attendance.

Mount Holyoke will return to action next Saturday, when it participates in the Eastern Connecticut State University Invitational at 10:00 a.m.
