SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (April 24, 2009) – Led by sophomore attacker Clara Raugei, the Mount Holyoke College women’s lacrosse team closed out its regular season with a convincing 18-3 triumph over non-conference foe Anna Maria College this evening at the Mount Holyoke Turf Field. It was the first ever meeting between the two programs.

Seven players found the net for the Lyons, who tied their program record for largest margin of victory in a game. The mark was previously established in a 20-5 win over Whittier College in 2007. Mount Holyoke’s 18 goals, 10 assists and 28 points were all season highs.

The offensive outburst was highlighted by Raugei, who recorded six goals and one assist. Senior midfielder Ava Gottschall and junior defender Kristen Cody posted three goals and one assist apiece, while first year midfielder Alex Crean dished out five helpers. Mount Holyoke finished with large advantages in shots (37-12), draw controls (13-10) and ground balls (33-17). It was the Lyons second consecutive victory.

Anna Maria was paced by first year midfielders Amanda Hevy and Katie Schebel, who amassed two points apiece. Hevy found the net twice, while Schebel contributed a goal and an assist.

Mount Holyoke recorded the first three goals of the night and led 11-2 at the break. The hosts then outscored Anna Maria 7-1 in the second stanza to put things away.

First year Jeanmarie Petersen made her first career start between the pipes for the Lyons. She made four saves to improve to a perfect 2-0 on the year. At the other end, first year Katherine Chousa turned away 12 shots for the Amcats.

Prior to the contest, Gottschall, along with classmates Ashley DeFlumere and Susanna Wilcox were recognized for their contributions to the Mount Holyoke program. Parents and friends joined the trio for the Senior Day celebration.

Mount Holyoke (5-10, 1-5 NEWMAC) will hit the road for a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament Quarterfinal round contest on Wednesday against a yet to be determined opponent. The tournament bracket will be released later this weekend. Anna Maria (2-10) is scheduled to round out its 2009 season at Framingham State College on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
