Austen Represents Mount Holyoke at NEWBA Senior All-Star Classic

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (April 2, 2009) – Mount Holyoke College women’s basketball team member Katie Austen recently participated in the 2009 New England Women’s Basketball Association (NEWBA) Senior All-Star Classic. A total of 23 seniors from around the region were chosen to play in the contest, which took place at Western New England College’s Alumni Healthful Living Center on Saturday. Players were selected by vote of the NEWBA coaches.
Over her four years with the program, Austen appeared in 93 games and made 46 starts. She served as team captain this season. One of the Lyons most consistent performers, she amassed 520 points, 312
rebounds, 158 assists, 103 steals and 18 blocked shots over her career. The guard posted a career free throw percentage of 73.4% (168-229).
In addition to being one of Mount Holyoke’s top defensive stoppers, Austen was also one of its best playmakers. Over the course of her four years, she made the transformation from reserve to go to player and team leader.
As a sophomore, Austen helped Mount Holyoke to its first ever NEWMAC Tournament Championship and the first NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. She was also a member of the 2005-06 squad that captured the ECAC Tournament Championship for the first time in school history.
Austen recorded a pair of double-doubles as a Lyon and reached double digits in the scoring column 18 times. She racked up a career best 22 points at Elms College (11/27/07) and versus Springfield College
(01/17/09). Her seven assists against Clark University (02/06/08) were a personal high, and she came up with a career best seven steals versus Smith College (01/30/08). The guard collected 12 boards twice.
Austen earned the program’s “Best Defensive Player” award as a junior and was selected to the Seven Sisters All-Tournament squad this winter. She earned New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Academic All-Conference honors as a sophomore.
Mount Holyoke closed out its 2008-09 campaign with an overall record of 7-19 and a league mark of 4-9.
