Mount Holyoke Races to 4th Place at Tartan Invitational
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (February 3, 2007) - The Lyons raced to a fourth place finish at the Tartan Invitational held at Smith College with 56 points in a field of 16 teams. Mount Holyoke finished ahead of archrival Smith College (51 points, 7th place), Wellesley College (42 points, ninth place), and Wesleyan University (11th place, 38 points) among others. Bryant College won the meet with 124 team points, followed by Assumption (72 points), and WPI (62 points).
Mount Holyoke grabbed two first place finishes at the Tartan Invitational, led by junior Meghan Lynch's win in the 5000m run. Lynch registered a time of 19:17.98 in the competition to pick up 10 points for the Lyons. Junior Grace Zeigler also earned a fist place rank in the Long Jump event. Zeigler recorded 15'07.5", just an 1.5 inches ahead of jumper from Saint Rose. In the shot put event, senior Andi Villasenor continued her season-long success earning a 4th place finish with a through of 36' even.
Eight Mount Holyoke athletes earned personal records (PRs) with their performances at Smith. Senior co-captain Gretchen Sminkey recorded a 38'9.75" in the weight throw. Sophomore Chelsea McCracken (WT 37'04.50", SP 30'11.75") and senior Shannon Graham (WT 32'00.75", SP 31'05.25") finished with PRs in both the weight throw and the shot put events. First year Hillary Haber also recorded a PR with a throw of 32'5.5" in the shot put.
The Lyons return to Middletown, Conn. to compete in their final meet of the regular season at Wesleyan College on February 10, 2007.
