Track Tallies Two New School Records at Wesleyan
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (February 10, 2007) - Senior Andi Villasenor (shot put) and junior Grace Zeigler (long jump) took home first place finishes and registered new Mount Holyoke College records in their respective events in Wesleyan's non-scoring meet. Villasenor reset the College record in the shot put for the third time this season, recording a throw of 38'5.05". This bests all of Villasenor's previous throws, indoor or outdoor. Grace Zeigler placed first in the long jump with a mark of 17'7", improving on the College's previous record by over a foot. These performances qualfied both athletes for the ECAC championships to be held on March 2-3rd.
Senior Gretchen Sminkey also notched a first place finish in the Weight Throw. Sminkey threw for a mark of 38'04", besting a field of 12 throwers. Sophomore Chelsea McCracken did not fall far behind her, taking third place and recording a personal record with a throw of 36'08.25".
In the running events, Ziegler finished third in the 200m dash, crossing the finish line at 27.71. In the 5000m run, juniors Julia Wagner (20:30.35) and Angela Diccicio (20:47.93) swept the second and third spots, respectively. First year Jessica Brezicha also had an impressive finish in the 55m hurdles, recording a mark of 9.74.
Five Mount Holyoke athletes will travel to the Division III New England Championships on Saturday, February 17th, to compete in individual events. The Lyons will also send two relay teams to compete in the 4x400m and the 4x800m. The meet will be hosted by the University of Southern Maine.
