Track & Field Earns 3rd Place at Coast Guard Invitational
New London, Conn. (April 7, 2007) - The Lyons raced to an impressive third place finish at the Coast Guard Invitational with 66 points. MHC finished behind first place Tufts University (201) and host Coast Guard (150). Behind MHC were UMASS Dartmouth (60), Conn. College (52), Wesleyan (50), NYU (47), Babson (45), Dutchess CC (20), and New Haven (16).Mount Holyoke athletes registered three second place finishes at the meet. In the 100 meter hurdles, Erica Buchinski '10 dashed to a time of 17.75 to pick up eight points for the Lyons. Grace Zeigler '08 continued to have success in the long jump event, recording a distance of 5.01m for second place. Zeigler finished just three-hundredth of a meter behind the top jumper. Senior Andi Villasenor threw the shot put 11.00m to pick up second place in the event.
Mount Holyoke has consistently produced in the throwing events this year. Along with Villasenor's second place finish, senior Gretchen Sminkey reached third place with her discus throw of 33.69 in the finals. Sminkey also grabbed fourth place in the hammer event (39.43m). In the running events, junior Meghan Lynch placed fourth in the 5k with a time of 19:18.01. Malai Tananone '07 raced to a time of 1.11.79 in the 400m hurdles, garnering a fourth place finish.
The 4x100 relay team recorded their fastest time this season (52.79). Four individual athletes recorded personal records at the Coast Guard Invitational as well:
Joan Meiner - 1500m (5:21.48), 400mH (1:24.03)
Amy Williams - 5k (21:29.74)
Natasha Payes - 100m (14.26)
Hilly Haber - Javelin (26.80)
Next weekend the Lyons will travel to Wesleyan to compete in the Wesleyan Invitational on Saturday, April 14th.
