Track and Field Takes Fifth, Boosted by Meiners New School Record
BRUNSWICK, Maine (April 21, 2007) -- Mount Holyoke earned a fifth place finish at the Aloha Relays hosted by Bowdoin College. Despite tough competition, the Lyons tallied four new qualifiers for the Division III regional meet, two new qualifiers for ECACs, a new school record, and two first place finishes.
Junior Grace Zeigler jumped to a first place finish in the long jump, recording a distance of 16'06.00" (5.03m). Zeigler also qualified for the 200 meter dash in the Division IIII championship with her mark of 27.56 at the Aloha Relays. Senior Malai Tananone grabbed first place in the 400 meter hurdles, registering a time of 1.06.85 in the finals. Tananone also qualified for DIII's in the 100 HH, recording a finals time of 16.92. Ebony Williams is the third member of the MHC Track team to qualify for Division III's at the Aloha Relays. Williams crossed the finish line in 13.47 seconds in the 100 meter dash to earn her qualification.
The fourth qualifer was first year Joan Meiners. In her first attempt in the 3000 meter Steeple Chase, Meiners recorded a time of 12:49.70 after plunging through seven water pits and 28 barriers. She blasted Mount Holyoke College's previous school record on the event by 20 seconds.
Senior Gretchen Sminkey finished in third place in the discus throw, recording a distance of 117'07" (35.85m). The throw earned her a ECAC qualification. Tananone will also be competing at the ECAC Championships in the 400 IH, after reporting a time of 1:06.85 this weekend.
