Indoor Track & Field Opens Season at Wesleyan Invitational

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (Dec. 1, 2007) - The Mount Holyoke College indoor track and field team opened its 2007-08 season at the Wesleyan University Invitational today. Leading the way for the Lyons at the non-scoring event were seniors Grace Zeigler (Oak Hill, Ill./Neuqua Valley), Meghan Lynch (South Hadley, Mass./Holyoke Catholic), Halaina Demba (Harvard, Mass./Bromfield) and Caroline Gillaspie (Athens, N.Y./Coxsackie-Athens).

Zeigler earned a second place finish in the long jump and advanced to the finals in the 55-meter dash. Her 5.09 meter long jump qualified her for the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships. It also made her eligible to compete in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships. Zeigler qualified for the NCAA Regionals in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.81.

Demba won the 3,000-meter race with a time of 10:59 and Lynch took second in the 5,000-meter competition with a time of 19:06. Meanwhile, Gillaspie cleared 5'00.25" in the high jump. They each qualified for the NCAA Regionals in their respective events.

Mount Holyoke received a strong performance from sophomore Hillary Haber (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield), who threw over 32 feet in the shot put. She took third place in the event, while senior captain Charisse Pickron (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) claimed sixth. Pickron also competed in the 55-meter dash, recording a time of 8.16.

Rounding things out for the Lyons was sophomore Ebony Williams (Detroit, Mich./University Liggett). She completed the 200-meter dash in 28.48, good for eighth place.

Mount Holyoke will return to action next Saturday at the Smith Invitational. The event is slated to begin at 10:00 a.m.
