Indoor Track & Field Grabs Sixth Place at Brandeis

WALTHAM, Mass. (Jan. 19, 2008) - The Mount Holyoke College women's indoor track and field team picked up a sixth place finish today at the Reggie Poyau Memorial, hosted by Brandeis University. Several Lyons achieved personal records at the meet, which included ten squads from around the region.

Brandeis captured top honors at the competition, notching 183.50 points. Bowdoin College was next with 135 points, while Amherst took third with a score of 127. Wesleyan University took home fourth place (77), and Trinity grabbed fifth (44). Mount Holyoke's 33 points were good for sixth place. The Lyons finished in front of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (32), Smith College (29), WPI (14), Emmanuel College (9.50) and the University of Massachusetts Boston (5).

Senior captain Charisse Pickron (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) achieved a personal indoor record with a 9.80-meter throw in the shot put. It was good for seventh place in the competition. Another personal best came from first year Jennifer Verna, who completed the 55-meter dash in 9.19 to take 27th place.

Mount Holyoke also received a boost from sophomore Crystal Boateng, who took sixth place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.50. Senior Grace Zeigler (Oak Hill, Ill./Neuqua Valley) recorded a fourth place result (4.78 meters) in the long jump, and classmate Caroline Gillaspie (Athens, N.Y./Coxsackie-Athens) turned in a matching fourth place finish (1.50 meters) in the high jump.

Senior Halaina Demba (Harvard, Mass./Bromfield) and first year Senia Bachir-Abderahman took part in the 1,000-meter run. Demba shaved three more seconds off her time (308.90) to take fifth. Meanwhile, Bachir-Abderahman nabbed 12th with a time of 3:22.72. She has achieved personal records in each meet thus far this season.

Mount Holyoke is slated to compete in the Wesleyan University Invitational next Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m.
