Squash Splits Pair at William Smith
GENEVA, N.Y. (Feb. 9, 2008) - The Mount Holyoke College women's squash team split a pair of matches today at the Smith Squash Center. Following a 9-0 rout of host William Smith College, the Lyons suffered a heartbreaking 5-4 setback versus Cornell University. Their season record now stands at 15-3.
Mount Holyoke's top four players captured victories in both of their matches. From number one through number four, the group included junior Pamela Anckermann (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Monte Alto), first year Vidushi Gurunada (Colombo, Sri Lanka/Lyceum Int'l School), junior Menusha Hettiarachchi (Colombo, Sri Lanka/Holy Family Convent) and sophomore Laura Robinson (Paget, Bermuda/Saltus Grammar School)).
The Lyons dropped just 34 points in their first match of the day versus William Smith. Robinson and senior Elizabeth Wright (Lexington, Mass./Phillips Exeter) each posted perfect scores of 3-0 (9-0, 9-0, 9-0) in their contests at the fourth and sixth slots, respectively.
In its second tilt of the day, Mount Holyoke was narrowly defeated by Cornell. The Lyons top four players grabbed victories in their matches, but their bottom five all fell in straight sets.
Mount Holyoke (15-3) will face off against Princeton University next Saturday at Trinity College. The contest is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
