Field Hockey: Wellesley at Mount Holyoke

THE MATCHUP: Mount Holyoke hosts New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Wellesley College Saturday afternoon (1:00) at the Mount Holyoke Turf Field. In 44 previous meetings between the programs, the Blue own a 29-12 advantage. The teams have finished in a tie on three occasions. Last fall, Wellesley downed the Lyons twice. During the regular season, the Blue came out on top 4-0. They then added a 4-1 triumph in the quarterfinal round of the NEWMAC Tournament.

THE LYONS: Mount Holyoke (4-3, 0-1 NEWMAC) has collected four wins in seven tries thus far this year. After downing Simmons College (4-1) in their season opener, the Lyons blanked both Bryn Mawr College (4-0) and Wilson College (2-0) at the Seven Sisters Classic. They also cruised to a 4-0 triumph over Western New England College. Forward Shara Robertson has recorded 12 points on six goals to lead the way for Mount Holyoke. The Lyons have also received a boost from forward Katelyn Frick, who has found the cage five times and dished out an assist. Forward Jess Fajardo has tallied three goals and two assists, while defender Tricia Chase has delivered three helpers. Katie Gibson has been the team’s featured goalkeeper. In 485 minutes played, she has made 39 saves.
THE BLUE: Wellesley (6-3, 1-0 NEWMAC) has been victorious in six of its first nine matches to begin the 2009 campaign. The Blue own wins over Gordon College (4-1), New England College (5-3), Vassar College (2-1 OT), Bryn Mawr College (13-1), Smith College (7-1) and Connecticut College (3-1). Callie Lekas, Sally Scudder and Kate Cushing have accounted for the majority of Wellesley’s offensive production, totaling 14 points apiece. Lekas has collected seven goals, Scudder has posted six goals and two assists, and Cushing has amassed three goals and a team best eight helpers. Goalkeeper Sarina Sawyer has posted a goals against average of 2.67 and a save percentage of .779 in 602 minutes played for the Blue.
NEXT UP: Both squads will return to action on Tuesday. Mount Holyoke will travel to Smith College for a NEWMAC match beginning at 7:30, while Wellesley will host Tufts University at 4:30 p.m.
