Soccer: Smith at Mount Holyoke

THE MATCHUP: Mount Holyoke hosts local rival Smith College Tuesday afternoon (4:30) at the Mount Holyoke Soccer Field. In 35 previous meetings between the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foes, the Pioneers own a 24-9 edge. The teams have finished in a tie on two occasions. Smith downed the Lyons for the third straight time last fall, winning by a score of 2-1.

THE LYONS: Mount Holyoke (1-8-0, 0-2-0 NEWMAC) picked up a 2-1 victory over Lesley University in its home opener on Tuesday, September 15. After falling behind 1-0, midfielder Mary Cooke tallied the equalizer in the 59th minute, and forward Courtney Carrier found the net for what proved to be the winner in the 83rd minute. Goalkeeper Ingibjörg Magnúsdóttir made five saves en route to her first collegiate victory. The Lyons suffered a 2-0 setback versus Wheaton College when they last took the field on Saturday. Midfielder Mallory Phaneuf has recorded a team best three points on a goal and an assist thus far this season. In addition to Cooke and Carrier, forward Brooke Winter-Potter has also registered a goal for Mount Holyoke. Magnúsdóttir has made 40 saves in 540 minutes played.
THE PIONEERS: Smith (1-7-1, 0-1-1 NEWMAC) kicked off its 2009 campaign with a 1-0 triumph over the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. Midfielder Emma Coffin found the net for what proved to be the match winner off an assist from midfielder Emma Shapiro in the 41st minute. The Pioneers have since gone winless over their last eight outings, posting seven losses and a tie. Smith has been paced by midfielder Etta Grover-Silva, who has tallied a squad best two goals. Forward Eleanor Theurer has also recorded a goal for the Pioneers, while midfielder Valerie Driscoll has dished out a team high three assists. Lindsey Gregor has played all 848 minutes between the pipes for Smith, recording a goal against average of 2.55 and a save percentage of .742.
NEXT UP: Both squads will resume their NEWMAC slates on Saturday. Mount Holyoke is scheduled to visit WPI at noon, while Smith is set to host the United States Coast Guard Academy at 1:00 p.m.
