Field Hockey: Hendrix vs. Mount Holyoke

THE MATCHUP: Mount Holyoke faces off against non-conference foe Hendrix College (Arkansas) this afternoon at St. Luke’s School in New Canaan, Connecticut. The contest will be a homecoming for members of both teams. Lyons head coach Andy Whitcomb is a graduate of St. Luke’s, where she played field hockey for Camille DeMarco-Havens. In addition, Havens’ daughter, Alyssa, is the Warriors starting goalkeeper, and Whitcomb’s parents were both longtime employees of the school. Her father Richard served as Headmaster, and her mother Barbara taught English.

MHC Logo THE LYONS: Mount Holyoke (7-5, 3-3 NEWMAC) rolled to its third win in four tries on Friday, when it blanked Babson College 2-0. Midfielder Peggy Wefald found the back of the cage for her second winner of the year in the 32nd minute. It was they Lyons first win over the Beavers since the 2005 season. Forward Shara Robertson has piled up a team best seven goals to lead the way for Mount Holyoke. Fellow frontliner Katelyn Frick has found the cage six times, while defender Tricia Chase has chipped in with four assists and seven defensive saves. Katie Gibson has been the Lyons featured goalkeeper. In 882 minutes played, she has registered a goals against average of 1.19, a save percentage of .826 and three shutouts.

Opponent Logo THE WARRIORS: Hendrix (2-8, 0-5 SCAC) has dropped six straight contests after opening the season with an overall record of 2-2. The Warriors suffered their second straight 2-1 overtime setback on Friday, when they were downed by Manhattanville College. Forward Liz Williamson recorded their lone goal in the 56th minute. It was her third tally of the fall. Hendrix has been paced by forward Kelly Rappe, who has found the back of the cage four times. Meanwhile, forward Abby Coleman has chipped in with two goals and a pair of assists. Goalkeeper Alyssa Havens has played all 712 minutes for the Warriors, posting a goals against average of 1.47 and a save percentage of .860. Both of her wins have been shutouts. 

NEXT UP: Mount Holyoke is slated to resume its NEWMAC schedule on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. against Clark University. Hendrix will host SCAC foe Sewanee on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. local time.
