Soccer: MIT at Mount Holyoke
THE MATCHUP: Mount Holyoke wraps up its 2009 home slate versus New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe MIT Saturday afternoon (1:00) at the Mount Holyoke Soccer Field. In 18 previous meetings between the programs, MIT owns an 11-5 edge. They have tied twice. The Engineers downed the Lyons for the fifth straight time last fall, winning by a score of 4-2.

THE LYONS: Mount Holyoke (3-11-0, 2-5-0 NEWMAC) has collected upset victories over both Springfield College (2-0) and Clark University (1-0) over the past two weeks. Both squads were undefeated in NEWMAC play before falling to the Lyons. Mount Holyoke also defeated Lesley University 2-1 earlier in the year. Midfielder Mary Cooke has paced the team with seven points on three goals and one assist. The Lyons have also received a boost from forward Lauren Orr, who has delivered two goals and a team best two helpers. Midfielder Mallory Phaneuf has found the back of the net once and assisted on one other tally. Meanwhile, fellow midfielder Perry Markell and Courtney Carrier have contributed one goal apiece. Goalkeeper Ingibjörg Magnúsdóttir has recorded a goals against average of 1.91 in 990 minutes played.
THE ENGINEERS: MIT (8-5-1, 4-2-1 NEWMAC) won three straight contests before falling 2-0 to Wheaton College in their most recent outing on Tuesday. The Engineers outscored their opponents 15-2 during their three match win streak. Forward Emily Kuo has racked up team highs of 25 points, ten goals and five assists thus far this season. MIT has also received solid production from fellow frontliner Alisha Lussiez, who has found the back of the net seven times and assisted on three other tallies. Midfielder Lauren Hernley has chipped in with four goals and four helpers. Meghan Wright has played 785 minutes between the pipes for the Engineers, posting two shutouts in the process. Katy Olesnavage has also seen time at the goalkeeper position, recording a goals against average of 1.09 in 495 minutes played.
NEXT UP: Both squads will wrap up their regular season slates with NEWMAC matches on Tuesday. Mount Holyoke is scheduled to visit the Coast Guard Academy at 6:00 p.m., while MIT is set to host Clark University at 7:00 p.m.
