MHC Christmas Vespers December 2 Posted: November 26, 2007 Mount Holyoke's annual Christmas Vespers will be held Sunday, December 2, at 4 and 7:30 pm in Abbey Chapel. Performing will be the Mount Holyoke Glee Club, Chamber Singers, and Chorale, directed by Kimberly Dunn; the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed by Mark Gionfriddo; and the English Handbell Choir, led by student Sarah Mauro '10. College organist Larry Schipull is also featured. Music faculty members Melinda K. Spratlan and Cheryl Cobb will perform as vocal soloists alongside the combined choirs. The Yale Brass Quintet will provide prelude music to open the concert. In addition to the familiar congregational carols and the much-beloved candlelight Gregorian chant processional, the concert will feature a series of pieces celebrating women as storytellers, pioneers, and composers. Each choral ensemble will present a set of pieces paired with a carol that provides appropriate commentary. Featured composers include Hildegard von Bingen, Christopher Brown, John Tavener, and J. S. Bach. The Magnificat text will provide a thematic framework for the concert as it appears in different forms throughout--in medieval, baroque, and modern settings. Ralph Vaughan Williams's Magnificat, a spectacular setting of "Fire and Ice" presenting the Annunciation from Mary's point of view, serves as the culmination of the evening; the piece will be sung by the combined choirs. There is no admission charge for this concert, but seating in Abbey Chapel is limited. Doors open 35 minutes prior to each performance. If you miss the concert on campus or want to attend twice, the Vespers will be repeated on Friday, December 7 at Boston's Old South Church.
