Panel to Discuss Events in Pakistan

Posted: November 26, 2007

The International Relations Program at Mount Holyoke College will host a panel discussion, Pakistan: A War on Civil Society, Wednesday, November 28, featuring MHC professors Sohail Hashmi (international relations) and Kavita Khory (politics), and political science professors Udhay Mehta of Amherst College and Sayres Rudy of Hampshire College. The discussion will take place at 7:30 pm in Dwight 101.

The panelists will examine the political situation since Pakistan's president, General Pervez Musharraf, declared a state of emergency in the country on November 3. They will discuss the role of political Islam in Pakistan, the mobilization of civil society organizations in recent weeks and the implications for democracy, and the role of the United States and other external actors in Pakistan's politics.

The discussion was organized by MHC students Mariam Sabri '10, Jigyasa Sharma '10, and Trishna Rana '10 in the wake of Musharraf's declaration of emergency rule. The Pakistani leader has since resisted pressure to lift the state of emergency order and restore the country's constitution.

This event is free, open to the public, and accessible to all.
