MHC Presents Third Arabic Film Festival

Mount Holyoke will host a four-day Arabic Film Festival starting the night of Monday, March 31. All films will be shown in Cleveland L1 and start at 7 pm.

According to series organizer Elizabeth Dumont-McCaffrey '10, "These four films represent the Arabic world today and present a range of compelling viewpoints on contemporary issues in Arab societies."

All films are in Arabic with English subtitles.

The Big Game

Against the Government: The movie tackles the widespread corruption in society through spotlighting a group of compensation lawyers who search for victims to handle their cases in return for a cut out of the compensation. From this point on, more shocking and surprising events take place.

A Date with the Unknown: A classic film noir starring the brilliant Omar Sharif, who is trying to find out the mysterious circumstances under which his brother was killed. This gem also features the fabulous Samia Gamal and features some of her famous dances.

Dananeer: One of Egyptian cinema's masterpieces and one of the classics starring the "Diva of the Orient" 'Um Kalthum. It is set during the time of the "Arabian Nights" around the singer Dananeer who has a divine voice who is taken from the simple Bedouin desert life to the decadence and intrigues of the palaces.

The Big Game: Hassan Bahloul is a poor university graduate who awaits any job offers. He lives with his father and refuses to work with him in his barber shop. When Hassan visits his old friend Ali who works for the telephone company, he finds out accidentally about corruption and crimes of some influential government executives. Hassan decides to face these corruptions by calling a top police officer and telling him about each crime. Hassan and Ali continue playing this big game until they, themselves, got trapped.
