MHC's Ackmann wins Guggenheim Fellowship

Posted: April 7, 2008

Martha A. Ackmann, senior lecturer in gender studies, has been named a 2008 Fellow by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in its 84th annual United States and Canadian competition.

Guggenheim Fellows are appointed on the basis of distinguished achievement in the past and exceptional promise for future accomplishment. Ackmann was selected for her research into the life of Toni Stone, the first woman to play professional baseball on men's teams, in the Negro Leagues of the 1950s. Stone is the subject of Ackmann's current book project, Curveball.

The 2008 Guggenheim Fellowship winners include 190 artists, scholars, and scientists selected from nearly 2,800 applicants for awards totaling $8.2 million.
