Art Museum Senior Profile Kelly Ann Lum '08 Position: Receptionist Majors: Art history and French Hometown: Burlingame, California Favorite piece at the museum: I like the Hokusai woodblock print of a great wave with Mount Fuji in the background. It's a really famous image and currently featured in the Side by Side docent's choice show. Kelly Ann Lum '08 began working at the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum during a January Term internship when she was a first-year student. The next semester she was hired as a receptionist and has stayed on in that position. "I sell merchandise and talk to visitors about the collection," she said. "Many people ask for my recommendation on what to check out. Some of them, especially alums, want to know about my experience as a student at Mount Holyoke. I really like those interactions. It's nice to connect with alumnae and hear about their time at MHC and what they've been doing since." As an art history major, Lum also has spent a good deal of time in the museum in conjunction with course work. During her sophomore year, she wrote an essay reviewing the curatorial work for In Present Company: The 1960s and Beyond, an exhibit on minimalist artists including Donald Judd, Carl Andre, and Frank Stella for one of her classes. "That's just one example of the ways I've used the museum throughout my learning experience at Mount Holyoke," Lum said. "There are so many great works of art here. Many of them aren't even regularly on view because the museum has limited space." Lum came to Mount Holyoke from California, in part, because she wanted what she describes as "the New England college experience." After visiting the campus, she said she was enchanted with its Frederick Law Olmsted landscape architecture. "I then had the chance to study Olmsted in a first-year seminar focusing on image, environment, and architecture. Four years later, I'm still enchanted with the campus." Lum, who will be graduating in December 2008, is looking forward to one more semester at the museum. "The best part of working there is the wonderful staff. It's a really supportive and intellectual environment," she said. Related Links: At the Museum: An Outstanding Senior Class
